Using culturally based communication

Using culturally based communication

Improving diversity and inclusion with African American Colleagues

Keynote
Program
Problem: Based on the 2018 Diversity and Inclusion Study by Deloitte university, “Fatigue has set in and progress has stalled. People are tired of talking about diversity and inclusion, frustrated by talk not turning into impactful action, and overwhelmed by the number of issues. While respondents continue to say that diversity and inclusion are important, action declined across the board.” Solution: The solution to overcoming the forward momentum in diversity and inclusion starts with communication. However, it goes beyond just talking about the subject. Participants need to listen to and understand each other’s cultural perspective. By the end of this talk, you will develop effective communication strategies that encourage open and honest communication, decreasing the resistance to talking and fostering long lasting conversations and subsequent action. - You will build effective communication by understanding the “intention” of the speaker, the “impact” that it has upon the listener and the “actions” necessary by both parties to make the difficult conversations easier - You will see how missing any of these 3 key components removes you from the “sweet spot” of effective communication - You will learn language patterns, both from the standpoint of the speaker and listener, that will help lower resistance and foster continued communication - Use your newly developed understanding and communication skills to begin or continue the process of transforming your organization’s culture
