Reframing Perceptions: Models of Disability

Reframing Perceptions: Models of Disability

Keynote
Program
Society is taught to see disability through the medical model, with the implication that disability is the fault of the individual, as well as a problem to be solved People with disabilities are more disabled by barriers in their environment and society than by their own impairment Through the social model, we see the problem in these barriers instead, and work to change society and environment, not people. By focusing change less on people and disability, we allow disabled people to feel empowered to ask for needed accommodations.
